The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is supporting businesses in the West Midlands to reduce their environmental impact.
Through the Decarbonisation Net Zero Programme, we are providing support and expert advice to businesses, enabling them to implement significant decarbonization measures, while lowering energy costs.
This Programme is part of the wider West Midlands Business Support activity funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
Background
In June 2019, with the Climate Change Act 2008, the UK Government committed to a 100% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This is referred to as the net zero target and small businesses play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
A study in 2021 (conducted by British Business Bank) found that awareness of net zero is growing among small businesses (at nearly 60%), but only about half consider decarbonization a priority. Additionally, 76% of small businesses have yet to identify their emissions impact or implement decarbonization strategies.
The Decarbonisation Net Zero Programme was created to deliver effective decarbonisation strategies aligned with the Government’s climate targets by providing support to businesses, helping them achieve net zero, and adopt sustainable business practices.
DNZ objectives are:
-
Support decarbonisation in small businesses
-
Improve natural environment
-
Grow the local economy
-
Help reach net zero
-
Provide support to businesses
