Simple swaps your business can make to become more sustainable

Published: 10 April 2025

Customers and staff are increasingly aware of business's impact on the environment. Implementing sustainable practices is essential for companies - big and small - that are aiming to reduce their environmental impact and promote a culture of responsibility.

Here are some straightforward swaps and initiatives that can make a significant difference across various business settings.

Energy

Switch to renewable energy providers: Transitioning to a provider that supplies renewable energy is a simple yet impactful change. Many major energy companies offer green business contracts, and several newer suppliers specialise in 100% renewable business tariffs. This switch can significantly lower your carbon footprint and may also result in cost savings. Don’t forget you can get a free energy assessment through the Business Energy Advice Service to identify opportunities for energy reduction too.

Get a free energy assessment: The Business Energy Advice Service offers free energy audits - and grants to implement positive changes - for businesses looking to reduce energy bills and emissions. Find out if you're eligible.

Office swaps

Equip staff kitchens with sustainable alternatives: Reduce reliance on single-use plastics and paper products by investing in reusable kitchen items. Provide employees with reusable coffee cups, water bottles, and utensils. Stock the kitchen with sustainable supplies such as biodegradable tea bags, compostable coffee pods, and recyclable packaging. Clearly labelled recycling bins will further encourage responsible disposal practices.

Choose plastic-free and eco-friendly office supplies: Switch to plastic-free and/or refillable pens. Buy plastic-free padded postage bags and windowless envelopes for your postroom. Also ask suppliers about their packaging and favour those who are striving to be plastic-free. Look at the cleaning products and toiletries your premises uses and search for eco swaps that use less disposable packaging and fewer harsh chemicals.

Travel

Encourage sustainable commuting: Promote eco-friendly commuting options among employees by providing amenities such as secure bike storage, lockers, and shower facilities. These provisions make it easier for staff to choose active transportation methods like cycling or walking. Additionally, implementing flexible work schedules can help employees avoid peak times on public transport, further supporting sustainable commuting choices.

Install electric vehicle charging stations: Demonstrate a commitment to reducing car emissions by installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at your premises. This initiative supports employees and customers who use EVs and positions your business as forward-thinking regarding environmental sustainability.

Implement a green travel policy: Develop a green travel policy that encourages the use of sustainable transportation options for business travel. This can include guidelines for choosing eco-friendly transportation modes, incentives for carpooling, and support for hybrid meetings to reduce the need for everyone to travel.

Choose eco-friendly delivery options: If your business involves deliveries, consider partnering with services that utilise electric vehicles or other low-emission transportation methods. For local deliveries, electric cargo bikes can be an efficient and sustainable option, reducing both emissions and operational costs.
