5 ways BEAS can help businesses reduce their energy usage

The Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) is offering funding to implement energy efficiency measures, but what are these measures and how do they work?

In this article, we’ll go through 5 of the best ways a business can reduce energy and cut costs, all of which can be implemented through the BEAS programme:

1. Boiler upgrade

Problem: Many businesses continue to rely on outdated boilers which leads to excessive energy consumption and higher operational costs. Older boilers also tend to run at only 70–80% efficiency, compared to modern models that can achieve efficiencies of 90% or higher.

Solution: Upgrading to a modern boiler allows you to use less fuel while producing the same amount of heat. The technology is very efficient, for every unit of electricity it uses, it produces three units of heat. This makes it a great heating method, as long as the building is well-insulated.

2. Improved ventilation

Problem: Older vents can have gaps or leaks due to wear-and-tear, letting air escape. Outdated fans can also run at the same speed through the day regardless of need, wasting energy.

Solution: Sealing and cleaning vents helps save energy and keeps airflow smooth. Upgrading to new fans that can also change speed based on the needs of the business, cutting down on energy use.

3. Energy-efficient lighting

Problem: Outdated lighting systems, consume significantly more energy than modern alternatives like LEDs. Older lighting technologies also burn out faster, leading to frequent replacements and increased operational costs.

Solution: Upgraded lighting won’t only provide a better quality of light, it will also deliver the same or more effective light while using less electricity, cutting electricity consumption by 60–70.

4. Window glazing

Problem: Single-pane windows or outdated double glazing can impact a business by allowing cold drafts and letting out heat during the winter. This increases energy consumption has heating needs to work harder to keep the premise warm.

Solution: Upgrading to double glazing helps retain heat, keeping interiors warmer in winter and cooler in summer. It is a cost-effective and sustainable to enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and create a more comfortable environment for employees and customers alike.

5. Education

Problem: A lot of businesses are unaware of the small steps they can take every day to reduce electricity and energy consumption.

Solution: The most cost-effective and simple way to reduce energy consumption is being educated on effective energy management. The Carbon Trust estimates that companies can save up to 5-10% on energy costs with good housekeeping measures including: Ensuring all lights are switched off when not in use, temperature management, and much more.

Of course, this is a small snapshot of the endless ways BEAS can help companies can save on energy and reduce costs.
